Ricky Bird

Ricky Bird  ( is the word, is the word....♫ ♫ ♫ ).......

The Greatwood Gold Cup - 1550 - NEWBURY
Firstly i must start by saying im on Michael Flips for this as i feel the drying conditions could see a big change in performance.
This race is no way as competitive as it appears as it is littered with poor jumpers, awkward travelers and those that often flatter to deceive , Ballabriggs is using this a warm up for the National is highly unlikely to get too involved, not completely without a chance just unlikely.
Saved by John has both the quicker ground and a raise in class to contend with so is readily overlooked.
The main players here for me will be The Knox's , Big Fella Thanks , Midnight Sail and Pepite Rose ( and of course Michael Flips )..
The Knoxs has a solid form look , likes the ground and has been keeping better company in general and does look quite a nice sort all round and will show even better with a run under its belt , was beaten when falling fto but was in for a place and does stay this trip well so has to be a leading player.
Big Fella Thanks appears to have been around forever and is lightly raced for an 11 yr old but all its 5 wins have come when there has been significant cut in the ground and i feel this may be to quick for him today so is reluctantly overlooked.
Midnight Sail is a very consistent sort that runs on any ground likes the trip ( is a C & D winner , not CD ) and will be competitive although this is his limit grade wise so for him to win he will have to race right upto the limit of his form without fail and i feel that maybe too tough an ask , a place beckons but no more.
PEPITE ROSE is the one to beat imo  another that is a separate C & D winner and this one will be much happier on this quicker surface and has possibly the strongest form on offer and with the Williams/Coleman combo in such tremendous form has to have a big big chance today.
The " Dark Horse " is probably Garynella from the Pipe team lightly weighted with a bit of form this yard are adept at getting runners into big races with little weight and winning and this should not be discounted getting a Stone + from his peers this can easily get involved in the finish and is a good EW shout.

SUMMARY : I feel The Knoxs can be taken on today , My selection ( Michael Flips ) can hopefully return to some form now on the quicker ground but it is PEPITE ROSE that is the one to beat , there are only 5 or 6 that can seriously be considered here so a good EW on any of the main protagonists should get you a decent run for your money , i will be dutching  Michael Flips & Pepite Rose and enjoying the race ;)..GL.
-RESULT = Unplaced , pants , garbage lol..sorry senor Bird ;()

Michael Flips

Micheal Flips (right): Worth a bet at Newbury
Micheal Flips (right): Worth a bet at Newbury

You know what I'm going to say. Those good-ground horses that have been trying to run through treacle-like conditions all season are now of interest after being dropped in the handicap.
Spring is in the air, Doncaster has 'Firm' in the going description and it's drying out at The Racecourse, Newbury, too where they're 'Good to Soft' ahead of Saturday's card.
In the case of I'm happy to apply the theory given that he is available at 11/1 for the StanJames Supporting Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase.
Look at his form this time last year. Second behind For Non Stop here at Newbury, then fourth in the Jewson behind Sir Des Champs, Champion Court and For Non Stop again.
That day he was 14 lengths ahead of Duke Of Lucca, Philip Hobbs' horse who was third in the Racing Plus Chase last weekend off a mark of 140.
It's form that makes him of real interest now the handicapper has given him a chance.
Micheal Flips was rated 146 at the beginning of the season, but he hasn't had his ground all winter, has now been dropped nine pounds to a mark of 137 and he looks attractively handicapped considering his form on a better surface.
The crucial thing is, he hasn't been running too badly in the softer ground. He was only beaten eight lengths by Ulck Du Lin off a 6lb higher mark at Newbury on Hennessy day and battled on for fifth behind Unioniste in the big handicap at Cheltenham in early December.
Fourth in a jumpers' bumper at Kempton last time, I'd expect a big run from Andy Turnell's horse and the 11/1 looks worth taking.
Up at Doncaster the advantage to better-ground horses is even more pronounced and though it's a good renewal with a whole host of in-form contenders I think is worth an each-way bet at 14s in the William Hill Grimthorpe Chase.
Nigel Twiston-Davies' charge has had 78 days staying away from bad winter ground since he unseated the trainer's son, Sam, at Cheltenham in December and back on a sound surface he's of real interest.
Seven of his nine career victories have had that word 'Firm' in the going description with the other two on good old plain 'Good' and he will surely have hated the heavy ground last time.
He's been dropped to a career-low chase mark of 129 and Adam Wedge takes a further 3lb off, making him a well-handicapped big-priced horse that I can't resist.

Fri Post

Been out today , had my first Game of Golf in nearlyearly two years..and for the first 7 holes i sucked royally, i was an epic fail on holes 1-7 however i picked up the bit and carried on and 8 & 9 were an improvement and then i smashed the back 9 , Tee shots were good and consistent, Chipping was solid , Putting was Well weighted and considered and all in all i was very happy, a couple of trips to the range and i should be ready to commence this years Society Comp which starts in 3 weeks and will put me right for the Lads Golf Jolly to Malaga in May ;-0 , WD to Shippers who started off tardily but gathered himself up and proved to be a class act on the back nine wp m8 and wd Sledge for playing well front 9 and enjoying the round, n1 , so bashed the Gym this week , played a bit of Tennis and got back to Golf..the exercise regime is coming along , need a good shower and relax now.
The week on PTS has started off well which is nice as we have a couple of new members from Lands afar and i hope i can continue to present them with winning opportunities and combined profiteering ;)...
Busy days racing for Saturday with a couple of smaller meetings backed up with a couple of competitive cards at Doncaster and Newbury , i will not produce any cards for these as the huge change in ground condition means that a lot of form could get turnt around and i shall just focus on my double/lay/savers and trading and put some focus into the members bets and PTS i will in all likelihood take it easy next with little doing , then i will post two cards on Saturday to sharpen my skills in readiness for an explosive Cheltenham Festival....soon be here and what a week that should be!! , so until then , unless there is any change or anything specific from you guys, have a great weekend, a great week and i will look forward to catching up with you all next week, ttfn x.
