CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL - DAY 3 - 2015

Well for me personally Day 2 was an unmitigated disaster....as i made a few pennies on the opening events and then emptied my Betfair account into Laying Dodging Bullets...which obviously went and Won....so i have had to go cap in hand to the Mrs  to get a top up to continue lol...fair to say she wasnt over impressed but also she understands that my Betfair account is akin to a roller coaster ride....up n down , profit n loss....and the only reason im asking for a cash top up is i emptied my account on Mon leaving only what i was prepared to lose this week....whilst the rest of my funds are in transit to my bank i cannot access them and this stops me from making chasey stupid arse decisions which i may have done had i not done this...so its not the end of the world...but i will have to be a bit more conservative in my approach for the next few days and focus on the bigger paying bets like the Place Pot and exotics....

In fact Day of two of Cheltenham this year has been the 2nd poorest in my History in every respect....still awaiting on the run of Stone Hard in the Finale as i type as that could be a game changer but i do have some cover in that as well...we will see. ( RESULT : )

Right so we move into Day 3.....this WILL BE my fucking day....at least i hope so lol....i would like to get my betting boots on but as i type the Mrs is giving me a scowly type look that tells its own story...damn it!!...

                             CHELTENHAM DAY 3

RACE 1

JLT Novices' Chase (Registered As The Golden Miller Novices' Chase) (Grade 1)

WIN - VAUTOUR - 1st @ 2.70
EW - PTIT ZIG -
LONG - COLOUR SQAUDRON -

SUMMARY - This is a funny old race with some group class runners facing Handicappers and a couple of frustrating types but what isnt funny is the Fav VAUTOUR who should win this ( notice ive now downgraded my will win to should win...confidence is battered lol )....This is another off the Willie Mullins conveyor belt of brilliance and has been rather left alone  by the media as they focused on Un De Sceaux , Dauvan and Faugheen and with that you can still get a very sensible 3.20 on this which although not value is very fair and this is def the horse they have to beat, trotted up lto but is prone to making errors so you place your bet with the warning..any mistakes and its game over as he simply wont get the free run around in small fields as before that said he is different class to most of these and is a strong bet.

PTIT ZIG rates a massive danger if his nerves have recovered from his lto fall with the PN stable in red hot form right now it would be folly to rule anything of his out but that aside he arrives here with form if not the scope to play a major role and will be involved in the finish.

COLOUR SQUADRON is a very frustrating beast....tons of ability but a really shitty attitude but at 30/1 with AP steering it has to be worth a nibble EW as this could easily take a place if he is in the mood.

RACE 2

Pertemps Network Final (Listed Handicap Hurdle)

WIN - DAWALAN -
EW - REGAL ENCORE -
LONG - CALL THE COPS - 1st @ 11.0

SUMMARY - 24 Runners....A Handicap....Cheltenham....Soft Ground.....ingredients that spell punting disaster.
DAWALAN is my selection for a punt as this is much better than some of these and has no peers in this race and just needs the race to run kindly.

" There are 16 qualifiers for this throughout the season but only once has a horse who has won one of those gone on to take the final. However, it was difficult not to be impressed by Regal Encore's victory at Exeter and connections appear to have found his best trip. The presence of A P McCoy in the saddle will ensure support. David Pipe runs four and habitual front-runner Bygones Sovereign will ensure a strong pace. He's on a hat-trick but may be too high in the weights now. Subsequent Grand National winner Pineau De Re and Trustan Times were both placed in this last year with On The Bridge sixth. Tim Easterby's charge comes out best of that trio today at the weights today but EDEYMI looks better handicapped. Tony Martin's gelding looks to have been laid out for this after his staying-on fourth behind Dawalan and Run Ructions Run under a claimer at Musselburgh last time. The quicker ground is a huge factor in his favour and he's run well before at The Festival. The Tourard Man is a stout stayer who will enjoy the likely fast gallop. He is weighted to reverse Exeter running with Regal Encore but quicker conditions are a concern. Katkeau has bags of ability but is a weak finisher and the handicapper may have got to Join The Clan. Big Easy should be thereabouts, however, and Call The Cops stormed home over this trip at Doncaster 12 days ago and could go close under his penalty " .

RACE 3

Ryanair Chase (Registered As The Festival Trophy Chase) (Grade 1)

WIN - JOHNS SPIRIT -
EW - HIDDEN CYCLONE -
LONG - THIRD INTENTION ( Don Cossack for the PP only ) - DC 3rd

SUMMARY - I really like this as a punting race as you will find a mix of class , mix of conditions and the runners are themselves just a very mixed bag of abilities.
JOHNS SPIRIT is a massively improved horse and has both class and guts and although rated to the hilt he is back in the right type of graded race , back over his ideal trip on a course he loves with all conditions to suit so i see nothing but a lung bursting effort from this and will be very surprised if he isnt in the frame.
I also like Hidden Cyclone a horse that isnt quite good enough for the top tier but is more than capable of dealing with most of these and is another that shouldnt fear anything else 2nd in the Clarence House and 2nd in last years Ryanair this will make its presence felt and should be included in all slips.
In truth its also hard for me to leave out Don Cossack who is possibly the form choice coming into this and will surely be thereabouts but after the bashing ive had nothing will surprise me lol.

RACE 4

Ladbrokes World Hurdle (Grade 1)

WIN - WHISPER
EW - LIEUTENANT COLONEL -
LONG - JETSON / MONKSLAND -

SUMMARY - For many a year this was my fav race but since the demise of Big Bucks ive not really paid it that much attention and this year i also feel rather disenchanted but it does look a competitive affair with a few nice sorts taking there place and a few with some class and others that have disappointed.
Reve Di Sivola , Sapphie De Rheu and Zarkander are three that seem to continually disappoint one way or another but any of this trio have the latent ability to win but again none can be fully trusted.
At Fishers Cross looks a spent force but the Irish seem to have a very strong hand with the likes of  Dedigout , Monksland , Jetson and Lieutenant Colonel all looking very handy and in truth they also have very little to separate them.
I do however like WHISPER who i am told by the yard comes here with arguablt their best chance of a win this festival and considering the runners they have that is quite a strong statement ( or is it ) and i also understand that BG has also intimated in a variety of interviews that he himself is rather sweet on this ones chances and at around 12/1 is very much on my EW single and acca list and for me is the best bet in the race.

RESULT / NOTES : Well thats me out the PP...never gave Cole Harden a thought...oh well..

RACE 5

Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate (Grade 3 Handicap Chase)

WIN - BUYWISE - 4th
EW - HUNTBALL -
LONG - HOLLOW PENNY / CAID DU BERLAIS - 5th & 6th

SUMMARY - A nothing race for me and i have no interest in this other than trying to stay alive in the Place Pot.
HUNT BALL has now fallen far enough to be considered and is back racing in the type of race he should have spent his career in and will make a good fist of this and if the enthusiasm is still there will be in the mix come the final third.
Radjahni Express continues to frustrate along with Caid du Berlais.
BUYWISE however could be sending this prize on a short trip to Wales as this vastly improved sort is not short on class on ability and is imo still a few short pf what he can achieve and i think may be " well in " here and the 10/1 seems a fair if not brilliant price.
Both Hollow Penny and No Buts are entitled to run well and at 40/1 & 30/1 are well worth looking at for some fun.

RACE 6

Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Chase (Amateur Riders)

WIN - CHAMPAGNE JAMES -
EW - MASTERS HILL / BLESS THE WINGS - unp / 2nd @ 35.16
LONG - THE PACKAGE - 1st @ 13.26 ( Straight Forecast £241.73

SUMMARY - Spring Heeled's victory last year was Ireland's first in this in more than 30 years but they'll have high hopes of a quick double with Gold Bullet. Crack amateur Derek O'Connor is on board but he does have his stamina to prove and there are similar concerns surrounding a whole host of his rivals including Garrahalish, Champagne James, Ericht and Heaney. Guess Again has a lengthy absence to overcome and The Nephew and Bless The Wings are also returning from a break while Tap Night seems to take one step forward and two back and could also run out of steam on the final circuit. Jamie Codd rode the winner of the four-miler here on Tuesday and could get a tune of THE PACKAGE, who has been placed at the last two Festivals off higher marks. He's in the veteran stage now but this tends to be a race for the more experienced chasers. Will Biddick is a good booking for Just A Par and he can reverse Exeter running with Masters Hill on 11lb better terms. Paul Nicholls' charge looks a solid each-way selection and the handicapper is starting to relax his grip on Vintage Star, though he's not fared too well here in the past.
