Derby Day Fall out...

Good morning all , ...what can i say??...i posted rather vehemently that Dawn Approach would win because i truly believed it to be the best horse in the race in what i feel and still believe was a sub standard renewal this is shown by the core speed figure and sectionals for the race and in fact over the last 20 Years only High Chaparral has ran a slower race ( 1/2 a second )  with most considerably quicker and Saturdays winner Ruler of the World would have been lucky to even manage a place in any of the last 20 running's thats how poor and slow it was.
This tho isnt the reason or excuse for Dawn Approach's poor show this was down to his head strong almost nutcase like attitude from the gate , his race was effectively over from the 2f pole as he was pulling like a train , throwing his head from side to side and patently refused to settle and was burning himself to the core and when Manning ( Jockey ) decided to pull him through to the front fully 7f from home it was game over...Dawn Approach should have just pulled himself up at the 3 pole and called it a day , you cant say he didnt stay , you cant say he wasnt good enough as he simply never raced but i doubt very much if we will ever get the chance to see if he stays as i feel he will stick to the 1m route with the St James Palace Stakes a possible next target or even Glorious Goodwood.
Back over 1m he will im sure prove to be the best 1 miler in the world then i fear as like a lot of top notch Dolphin horses it will be a case of breeding which is a shame but money rules.

Away from the Derby we had St Nicholas Abbey reminding us what a quality animal he is by hosing up in the Coronation Stakes which also reminded us of how Fantastic Frankel was as he absolutely destroyed this beast ( ran right to form as well ) in the Juddmonte Stakes over 1m2f but with No Frankel i see nothing to beat this over this trip and this could be a golden year for the veteran ( aged 6 ).

Duke of Firenze ran right back to form as i had said it should when winning the Dash under an inspired ride from Moore and Thunder Strike destroyed the field in the Woodcote over 6f in a very good time indeed and after showing lightning speed over 5f this has now shown to be a very classy and quick beast and will be a major player in any event he turns up in and if he can further transfer these skills and speed to 7f or even 1m then next years Guineas is all ready done n dusted but this is a big ask and a big step up but the signs are good ( another tip from me yesterday ).

So the calm after the storm..what is there today??..well frankly not a lot, a couple of shitty NH meetings in the uk , and one of each in Ireland  and the only stand out bet for me is MARCHESS MARCONI in the 1640 ( Listowel ).

Over at Chantilly today we do have a rather big race in the shape of the Prix Du Jockey Club ( G/C 1  ~ AKA The French Derby ) and i have a horse in this im rather keen on in THE SKY HUNTER owned by Godolphin and Trained by Andre Fabre ( Guyon rides ) this won its only start as a 2yro over this trip then started off his campaign with an effortless victory ( again over this trip ) before lto trouncing a good field for a 3rd Distance win ( from 3 runs ) and was last night ( when i originally posted ) 9.6 and is currently 9.4 this has an outstanding EW chance imo and is well worth some interest ( Lava Flow looks quite useful in the 1320 as well ). - 3rd @ 9.06

The racing this week until Saturday at least looks quite ordinary and run o the mill and i will not be producing any cards until then ( Sat ) but i will offer any ad hoc advice in the interim should it be required , have a great week all , TTFN X.

  1. Dawn Approach will himself to be no great shakes by the end of the season. Camelot's 2000 Guineas was better than Dawn Approach, although not visually. Are you saying a slow time = bad form? High Chaparral a bad horse?

    1. Hi MP ,

Camelots 2000 guineas was not better than DA ( this is in my opinion , and thats the thing with racing its full of opinions ) and i do do feel that over 7f/1m Dawn Approach is a beast and even if it raced proper i am not convinced that it would get 1m4f and would be worried over 1m2f when we see this race again over 1m it will blow the field away and prove itself to be a class beast .
Slow Time does mean poor derby although the winner is not gteed to be shit,HC was a very good stayer , not a world beater but just very good.
The times in the race , the way they finished and the way the race was run suggests to me this is a weak Derby field ( a fact which has been recognized by the likes of Timeform , Racing Post and Sportinglife plus most if not all pundits will also back this up )the winner could be absolutely anything to be honest and in my Derby card i gave it a mention and i was positive towards it so who knows , the fact here tho is this WAS a weak Derby and Dawn Approach ran no sort of race and is still currently the best 1m in Europe.

  2. Thank you for your reply. You're right racing IS full of opinions, but there is only 1 right one. Bookmakers have built thousands of shops and made billions of people who come to the wrong opinion.
You seem fixated with Timeform, Racing Post and Sporting Life and The Derby itself. I never mentioned the Derby and I wouldn't ask a pundit anything. Have you heard them picking winners lately? No either have I.
You stated that it was a poor renewal and "THIS IS SHOWN BY THE CORE SPEED FIGURE AND SECTIONALS" - Whether or not its a poor renewal or not the core speed figure and sectionals don't show this. You'd be an absolute fool to even jump to that conclusion. The time tells you that they went slow, thats all it tells you. That and the fact that you can't go claiming its a world beater yet or a bad horse. The time for the Derby is worthless for basing a judgement on any of the horses just yet, it was a false run race. Good and bad horses run in them EVERY day.

Remember you heard it here first, you won't be claiming Dawn Approach as a great horse by the end of the season.

    Here endeth the lesson.

    1. Haha Great Banter MG , listen listen ( you know who says that a lot ? ) i dont disagree with your points entirely and i hold no candle for Timeform etc as i use my own tissue every morning and my own speed ratings ( inc actual horse rating )and you made ref to the Derby by using HC as an example of my write up , you are right in saying at this early stage of the season its nigh on impossible to fully judge any of the runners on what they have shown however my musings were based solely around the Derby and the quality as it stood right now....this was a poor derby with a very average field running a muddling race with a heaped finish in a slow time......ive seen better hcaps than this...however what may transpire over the next few months or so is a few of these improve hugely and turn out to be decent animals and most if not all will notch a win or two at whatever level....my point is , my whole piece was based solely on the DERBY and how they are right now with no ref to the future.

Get in touch thru Ascot and after the Irish Derby and we can expand on this more and if you get chance during the day when a card is up it would be nice to have some banter regarding that specific day ;)...Take it easy m8.
